Sisymbrium altissimum is a continental species of the Brassicaceae,
which in the past was able to expand far to the west into Central Europe.
Distribution, ecology and plant sociology of this successful neophyte were
investigated in the synanthropic part of its distribution area. The R/CR-strategist
(seed weight: 0,189g/1000 seeds) is characteristic of open, often disturbed
places in the environs of towns and traffic facilities. In northwestern
Germany, Sisymbrium altissimum is a character species of the Lactuco-Sisymbrietum
altissimi. Whereas S. altissimum is associated with Sisymbrium
loeselii and Descurainia sophia in Eastern (Central) Europe,
most stands in northwestern Germany are without any other Sisymbrium
species. On favorable sites the Lactuco-Sisymbrietum altissimi reaches
an above-ground production of 774,5g/m² dry matter. The classification
into a typical subassociation and a subassociation of Bromus tectorum
is proposed. Besides this, the sociology of Sisymbrium loeselii
and Descurainia sophia is also investigated.
